Is Artillery Still Relevant?
YES and NO
YES. Nothing conventional (non-nuclear) delivers the volume of blast effects at less cost than the artillery family of weapons
YES. Technology has improved the accuracy, range and effectiveness of the artillery family of weapons.
NO. It depends on your adversary.
The United States and other developed countries can return counter battery fire while incoming artillery and mortar projectiles are still in flight.
No. Drones large and small have changed warfare. With the proliferation of Unmanned Ariel Systems (UAS) towed artillery is at high risk in the modern battlefield.
NO. Most large caliber anti-aircraft artillery is obsolete with the advent of shoulder fired and other more effective anti-aircraft rocket/missile systems.
NO. Other than tanks, most anti-tank guns have been replaced by more effective shoulder fired weapons and other types of anti-tank systems. Some anti-tank guns have been observed in use however, in Ukraine.
