M274 "Mechanical Mule"
The M274 was designed to carry cargo and fill a gap in size between "Jeeps" and larger vehicles. With an aluminum body for airborne use, it was gas powered and made in 4x2 and 4x4 versions.
In addition to cargo, it was also a platform for various weapons such as the 106mm Recoilless rifle version on display.
The "Mule" was made from 1956 to 1970 and was in service until the 1980's. Approximately 12,000 were manufactured. This particular vehicle was made in 1968.
Large numbers were used in Vietnam and the mule is familiar to many veterans who served there.
An unusual feature of this vehicle is that while it is made for the operator to sit and drive, the steering column and controls can be folded down so that the operator can crawl to "drive" the vehicle.
We have had more than one Vietnam veteran visit the museum who has operated the mule in this manner.
